Kneecap cancel US tour due to UK terror charge and government “witch-hunt”
Kneecap have announced that they have been forced to cancel their upcoming US tour due to the court date for Mo Chara’s terror charge in the UK, as part of what they branded a government “witch-hunt” against them.
The band posted a statement to their social media on August 25th, in which they explained: “Due to the proximity of our next court hearing in London to the first date of the tour, as the British government continues its witch-hunt, we will have to cancel all 15 US tour dates in October.”
The Irish rap trio added: “With every show fully sold out, to tens of thousands of fans, this is news we are sad to deliver, before concluding their statement by saying, “But once we win our court case, which we will, we promise to embark on an even bigger tour to all you great heads.”
Kneecap had been due to kick off their US tour in New York on October 1st, but this has now been scrapped due to their ongoing legal battle in the UK, in which Chara has been charged with a terror offence relating to support he allegedly displayed for Hezbollah at one of the band’s gigs in 2023. He is next set to appear in court on September 26th.
However, the band specified that the cancelled dates would not affect their planned run of gigs in Canada, which they are still slated to perform later in the same month.
Furthermore, they indicated in their post that they would be able to share “something very special for US fans” in order to still give them a Kneecap experience in October, but said that further details would be shared next week.
The trio are set to return to the UK and Ireland afterwards for a headline tour throughout November, beginning in Bournemouth before concluding on December 17th in Dublin.
