Killer Mike files lawsuit following arrest at Grammys in 2024
Killer Mike has filed a lawsuit against the private security companies that were working at the 2024 Grammys, following his arrest at the ceremony last year.
The Atlanta rapper, who is known for being one-half of the hip-hop duo Run The Jewels, was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department after an altercation allegedly broke out when the artist attempted to access the red carpet area. The police charged him with misdemeanour battery, and he was released from custody after a couple of hours.
According to reports from Variety, the rapper, whose real name is Michael Render, is suing the companies S&S Labor Force, Inc. and JRM Private Security, accusing them of false arrest, assault, battery and other charges, claiming they had “no reason” to detain or suspect him of any wrongdoing.
The lawsuit reads: “Despite Plaintiff’s multiple attempts to clarify his identity and purpose for being in that secured area and his direct need to access the red carpet area for scheduled public statements and to take photographs, Defendants refused Plaintiff any forward movement.”
It continued: “When Plaintiff sought to leave the area, Defendants physically assaulted and battered him to prevent him from leaving by grabbing his arm and telling him to remain there.”
The lawsuit does acknowledge that the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office did not proceed with any charges or prosecutions against Render in recognition of the fact that he had not committed the crimes he was being accused of.
Killer Mike won three awards at the 2024 Grammys, taking home the award for ‘Best Rap Album’ for Michael, and receiving ‘Best Rap Performance’ and ‘Best Rap Song’ for his song, ‘Scientists & Engineers’.
The 2025 Grammy Awards took place on February 2nd, with Beyoncé, Charli XCX, Kendrick Lamar and Chappell Roan among the big winners at this year’s ceremony.
