Kieran Culkin pokes fun at Adrien Brody at the SAG Awards: “There was no reason to take that shot”
Kieran Culkin has made regular appearances at many of the award ceremonies this season, scooping up a BAFTA and Golden Globe for “Best Supporting Actor” after his performance in A Real Pain. Because of this, the actor is no stranger to giving an acceptance speech, using his time at the podium to poke fun at fellow actor Adrien Brody for his lengthy speeches.
When awarded the SAG Award for ‘Male Actor in a Supporting Role’, Culkin said, “Thank you for this incredibly heavy award; I don’t think there’s any way anyone can hold this for 45 seconds… which is the allotted time, Adrien Brody!”
Culkin laughed before clarifying that he was joking, saying, “There was no reason to take that shot. I love you. Take your time.” Brody has been a prime candidate for the ‘Best Actor’ award following his leading performance in Brady Corbett’s The Brutalist, who responded well to the joke from his seat in the audience.
In A Real Pain, written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg, Culkin and Eisenberg play two cousins who return to their Grandmother’s hometown in Poland to reconnect with their family history. Over the course of the trip, the pair confront their differences and their way of dealing with pain. During his speech, which exceeded the allotted 45 seconds, Culkin thanked Eisenberg and the director’s sister, Halle.
“For those of you who don’t know, [Jesse] cast me in this movie without auditioning me or seeing my work or seeing me in anything ever… which he thinks is normal, and I can’t even get into how annoyingly wrong he is. But he cast me because his sister told him to. And he puts a lot of faith in her, which is really sweet but dumb.”
He continued: “So yes, thank you Jesse for putting me in this movie. But I want to take a moment to thank Hallie: Thank you, Hallie, for thinking of me and putting your name into your stupid brother’s ear.”
Culkin was up against actors like Jonatha Bailey, Yura Borisov, Edward Norton and Jeremy Strong in this category, but has proven to be incredibly popular this season after his layered performance in the comedy/drama.
