Kevin Spacey hits out at “desperate” and “one-sided” documentary
Actor Kevin Spacey has condemned the upcoming Channel 4 documentary Spacey Unmasked, which contains numerous historical allegations of sexual misconduct against him.
Last year, a jury at Southwark Crown Court in London cleared Spacey after the actor faced 12 charges of sexual offences against four men. The allegations related to incidents that the four men claimed took place between 2001 and 2013.
Following the verdict, Spacey told the press outside of Southwark Crown Court: “I am enormously grateful to the jury for having taken the time to examine all of the evidence and all of the facts carefully before they reached the decision.”
Now, Spacey Unmasked, which is set to be released on May 6th and May 7th in the United Kingdom, will feature ten men who share allegations of abuse against Spacey. Their testimonies span five decades and include alleged incidents that they claim took place in London, Los Angeles and New York.
Furthermore, Spacey Unmasked includes an allegation which happened on the set of the hit Netflix series House of Cards. None of the ten men who speak in the documentary were involved in the London trial.
While Spacey was given a right to reply to the claims mentioned in the documentary by Channel 4, he took to Twitter to share his frustration with the amount of time he’s been given and explained his issues with Spacey Unmasked.
The actor stated: “Over the last week, I have repeatedly requested that Channel 4 afford me more than 7 days to respond to allegations made against me dating back 48 years and provide me with sufficient details to investigate these matters.”
Spacey continued: “Channel 4 has refused on the basis that they feel that asking for a response in 7 days to new, anonymized and non-specific allegations is a ‘fair opportunity’ for me to refute any allegations made against me. I will not sit back and be attacked by a dying network’s one-sided ‘documentary’ about me in their desperate attempt for ratings.”
In response to Spacey’s comments, a representative from Channel 4 claimed to The Hollywood Reporter that he was “given sufficient opportunity to respond”.
Following the birth of the #MeToo movement in 2017, Spacey was at the centre of a plethora of sexual misconduct allegations. In addition to being cleared in the London trial, a jury in New York found Spacey not guilty in 2022 after he was accused of molesting Andrew Rapp in the 1990s when Rapp was 14.
