Kacey Musgraves denies scowling at Beyoncé’s ‘Best Country Album’ win at Grammys: “A false narrative”
Singer Kacey Musgraves has denied scowling at Beyoncé following the music legend’s shock win of ‘Best Country Album’ at the Grammys on February 2nd. A spokesperson described social media rumours about the incident as “a false narrative”.
Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter was the unexpected runaway success story of the night. She took home many of the awards’ most coveted prizes, including ‘Album of the Year’ and ‘Best Country Album’, the category she shared with stalwart country artist Musgraves and her album Deeper Well.
However, as Beyoncé took to the stage to accept the award, in a clip surfaced online Musgraves and fellow nominee Lainey Wilson could allegedly be seen scowling while they stood to applaud the winner. Now, a representative for Musgraves has set the record straight by telling E! News: “It’s a sensationalistic false narrative meant to pit two talented female artists against each other.”
They added: “There was simply no scowl or expression made,” putting to bed rumours of a rift between the two country stars over the award. In the end, Musgraves came away with the prize for ‘Best Country Song’ for her song ‘The Architect’, beating out Beyoncé’s ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’, allowing both artists to share the highest level of country acclaim.
For the first time in her 30-year career, Beyoncé finally scooped ‘Album of the Year’ for Cowboy Carter, marking a historic night for the presence of Black artists in the American country music scene. When making her acceptance speech, Beyoncé thanked and praised the LA firefighters presenting her the award, whom the night had raised money for following the recent devastating wildfires in the city.
Elsewhere, the stars came out in force for the music industry’s event of the year, with Chappell Roan making a defiant speech about artists’ treatment by labels when accepting her award for ‘Best New Artist’, and Kendrick Lamar taking home both ‘Song of the Year’ and ‘Record of the Year’ for Drake diss track ‘Not Like Us’.
