Grammys 2025: Beyoncé becomes the first Black woman to win ‘Best Country Album’

This year’s edition of the Grammys has helped Beyoncé create history once again, as she just became the first Black female woman to win the ‘Best Country Album’ prize.

It’s her eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter, which helped her add another illustrious prize to her already gigantic list of accolades. Released in early 2024, it’s a fascinating multi-genre project that leans on the frameworks of country music to highlight important parts of Black history that have often been overlooked.

Introducing the award was arguably the most famous recipient of it, Taylor Swift, who took the opportunity to trace the unique lineage of pioneers that have previously accepted the coveted prize.

Swift said, “It’s an honour that has gone to great artists who I admire so much, like the Chicks, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, George Strait, Faith Hill, Vince Gill, Alison Krauss and Shania Twain.”

In her acceptance speech, Beyoncé expressed surprise at winning ‘Best Country Album’ but maintained that it was a result of the hard work and dedication that had gone into the production of Cowboy Carter.

She gushed, “I was not expecting this… I want to thank God that I’m able to still do what I love after so many years, oh, my God! I’d like to thank all of the incredible country artists that accepted this, this album we worked so hard on…”

Continuing, “I think sometimes genre is a cold word to keep us in our place as artists, and just want to encourage people to do what they’re passionate about. And to stay persistent.”

This win is not only a symbol of her ability to still experiment and find new paths to express her artistic vision but also her incredible longevity at the very top of the music industry, and it doesn’t seem like she’s going to be coming down any time soon.
