Journey’s Jonathan Cain wants Bruce Springsteen to “shut up” about politics
Journey guitarist and Donald Trump supporter Jonathan Cain has hit out against Bruce Springsteen for his political views.
Cain, whose wife Paula White-Cain has worked as an advisor to Trump since 2016, has always been open about his conservative beliefs, but believes Springsteen should focus on his work rather than sharing his perspective on the world.
Speaking on The Complete Disaster Network, Cain firstly said of his own politics, “We’re blessed to live where we live. And I’m obviously a conservative. I used to be a Democrat back in the old days, but I couldn’t go there anymore.”
He then explained that Barack Obama was the tipping point in him switching allegiances, adding, “I thought Obama maybe, but then I saw where he was going and I’m, like, ‘Okay, we can’t have this anymore.”
Then, Cain turned his attention to Springsteen, who he wants to stop talking about politics, stating (via Blabbermouth), “So I’m a diehard conservative. And guys like Bruce Springsteen should shut up. Honestly, shut up, Bruce. Who’s the other one? Robert De Niro. I mean, who cares, guys? Really? Do your art.”
Although Cain then said, “I try to keep politics out of my music”, but caveated that by saying of his latest release, “Now I’m releasing this patriotic song (‘The Winds of Freedom: A Salute To America’) because I’m a diehard patriot.”
Similarly, while Cain claims to keep his politics out of music, in addition to his latest patriotic anthem, he also released a tribute song to right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk following his murder in 2025.
Furthermore, Cain performed at Mar-a-Lago for Donald Trump in 2022, which caused a backlash from his own bandmate, Neil Schon.
Springsteen, who recently toured the US and delivered nightly rallying calls against the Trump administration, has no plans to stop speaking his mind, either.
Earlier this month, he branded Trump and his allies a “ship of fools”, before explaining why he’s a true patriot, adding, “I believe in critical patriotism. I believe that’s the definition of a patriot, you know, that you love your country so much that you are willing to look at it clearly, recognise its faults, encourage it to be a better place, and believe that you carry in your heart the country that is waiting.”
