Bruce Springsteen labels Donald Trump administration a “ship of fools” in latest attack
Bruce Springsteen has launched yet another attack on US president Donald Trump, this time calling his administration a “ship of fools”.
The rock star and the president have a longstanding history of launching insults at one another, with Springsteen being a harsh critic of Trump’s politics.
As such, in a recent interview with PBS, titled Bruce Springsteen: Finding America in Song, The Boss was naturally brought on to this topic of conversation, in which he once again voiced his anger towards the administration before justifying his stance.
Branding Trump and his allies a “ship of fools”, Springsteen went on to express his stance on the political spectrum by saying: “I believe in critical patriotism. I believe that’s the definition of a patriot, you know, that you love your country so much that you are willing to look at it clearly, recognise its faults, encourage it to be a better place, and believe that you carry in your heart the country that is waiting.”
Most recently, the ‘Born to Run’ singer channelled the strength of his anger into the song ‘Streets of Minneapolis’, released earlier this year as a protest song in response to the ICE raids in Minnesota.
Asked how he felt when he wrote the song, Springsteen responded, “I was very angry. And usually, I write songs that have a lot of political implications but very often are not directly political. So, in this case, I wrote a protest song. I thought, ‘Gee, maybe this is a little broad?’ You know?”
However, it was a friend of the classic rocker who convinced him otherwise, as he added, “But then I had my buddy, Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine, and he says, ‘No, no, no.’ [Morello] says, ‘Bruce, nuance is great, but sometimes you’ve gotta kick ’em in the teeth.’”
As a result of all of this, Springsteen said that despite the threat Trump poses to America, he is currently remaining “optimistic” about the future, after his administration has ended.
I think we’re going through a very, very difficult period, but I tend to remain realistically optimistic,” The Boss noted. “That the country will pull out of it and something new will be born from it that is good.”
Although Trump and his officials have not yet responded to these latest comments, the president has variously criticised the singer for his political stance in the past, writing on Truth Social in April that he is a “bad, and very boring singer […] who looks like a dried up prune.”
