Josh Brolin reveals he wrote poems about ‘Dune’ co-stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya

Josh Brolin, actor and star of Dune, alongside cinematographer Greig Fraser, have documented the shooting of parts one and two of the blockbuster in their new book, Exposures.

Set to be released on February 13th, the book will be published by Insight Editions and feature rare on-set moments between the cast and crew. Josh Brolin, who plays Warmaster Gurney Halleck in both films, has shared his on-set experiences in the book through poems.

Brolin said in an interview that everything he wrote was a reaction. “The writing is very different, tonally. Sometimes it’s tongue-in-cheek, sometimes it’s descriptive, sometimes it’s a dialogue and sometimes it’s a poem.”

The collaboration between Brolin and Fraser was cemented on set as the two formed a bond during production. Fraser said, “He’s a beautiful writer. I was reading it after coming home from work and talking to him about those words the next day, and it became fun to discuss his process and his writing. His words created incredible images in my mind for just colours, shapes and ideas in my mind.”

Fraser also spoke about how intimate images, paired with the words of Brolin throughout the book: “When I read those words next to one of those images, it grows, it makes something more than what those images are by themselves. And when there are words by themselves with no images, then it allows the next image to have context.”

Brolin is proud of the finished product, which he says was difficult to put together given his original draft of the book consisted of 95,000 words. “I’m cutting that down into something edible,” he says.

Brolin shared a haiku from the book: “’Lie down in the light / as fictional characters / watch you from afar.’ I love that because it’s pointing out the fact that this is not real, but there’s nothing more real.”
