Denis Villeneuve describes ‘Dune: Part 2’ as “more of an action movie”

Dune director Denis Villeneuve has labelled the upcoming sequel to his 2021 film as “more muscular” than its predecessor.

The upcoming film sees Florence Pugh and Austin Butler make their arrival into the science fiction franchise. Pugh plays the role of Princess Irulan Corrino, the daughter of Christopher Walken’s Emperor Shaddam IV. Whereas Butler portrays Feyd-Rautha, the nephew to Stellan Skarsgård’s Baron Harkonnen character.

Additionally, Timotheé Chalamet and Zendaya will be returning to the Dune universe to play Paul Atreides and Chani, respectively. Due to the strikes in Hollywood, production of the film was derailed, leading to the release date being pushed back until 2024.

In a new interview with Total Film, Villeneuve said of the upcoming film: “The first movie was more meditative and contemplative. We were following a young man discovering a new planet, a new culture. The second movie…it’s more of an action film than the first part. It’s more muscular.”

The director’s latest comments follow recent remarks he made about his hopes to complete the Dune trilogy. He told Empire: “If I succeed in making a trilogy, that would be a dream”. As it stands, Villeneuve’s two Dune movies tell the story of Frank Herbert’s first 1965 novel.

Although Villeneuve didn’t confirm whether there will be a third movie, he did imply that he’s working on a script for one: “I will say, there are words on paper.”

Meanwhile, earlier this week, during a panel with Villeneuve and the cast in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Pugh’s right eye was struck by an object that was thrown from the crowd. Her castmates were visibly concerned for Pugh’s well-being, and she could be seen in the footage holding her head before picking up the item.

During the event in Brazil, Pugh praised the energy from the crowd prior to the incident, stating: “Coming in here, the power of this room is because of the first movie. We felt that when we went on set every single day. So it feels really, really special being here with the second one. And I’m very, very proud”.

Pugh also discussed the thrilling experience she had while shooting the movie, recalling: “I had an amazing time coming and just hanging out with these people, let alone actually getting to work with them.”
