Jorginho’s wife, Catherine Harding, breaks silence on Chappell Roan incident with her 11-year-old daughter
The wife of footballer Jorginho, Catherine Harding, has broken her silence on the situation that developed with Chappell Roan, who was accused of mistreating her daughter at a hotel in São Paulo.
Sparking the unlikely feud, Jorginho accused Roan’s security team of acting aggressively towards his 11-year-old daughter in the hotel they were both staying at, before the singer was set to perform her set at Lollapalooza Brazil.
Roan has since shared her side of the story online, claiming that the security guard was not her “personal security” and has apologised, despite not having “seen a woman and a child”.
She added: “I do not hate children. That is crazy. I am sorry to the mother and child; if you felt uncomfortable, you did not deserve that.”
Now, Harding has broken her silence on the matter by acknowledging, and also contesting, that the security guard who left her daughter in fits of tears wasn’t in some way affiliated with the singer.
“100 per cent this security guard was not a security guard of the hotel. That’s what I can say,” Harding remarked in a social media video. “He looks after artists, so. I don’t know if it was her personal security guard, but he was with her. So that’s all I know.”
Harding continued, “Did she send him to do it? Again, I don’t know. Look, I would like to hope not, but at the same time, I think that you have a responsibility when you are a celebrity to make sure, I guess, that the people that work for you and that act on your behalf are acting on your behalf.”
She went on, “So, would he do that if he didn’t have her authority to do so? I don’t know if he does; then obviously that’s a big problem because then he’s representing her in a way that she doesn’t want to be represented. So I think that’s really important for her to notice and realise that’s not correct.”
In the video, she also recalled her side of the story, whereby her daughter went into the “garden area, which we were also free to go into” to understand if the woman with “long red hair” who had walked past earlier was Roan, her daughter’s favourite musician.
Harding clarified that her daughter “didn’t have her phone, she didn’t try to take a picture, she didn’t approach her. She literally didn’t do anything; she just looked at her and smiled.”
Her daughter returned to their breakfast table, unsure if it was the ‘Pink Pony Club’ singer, who usually adorns drag-inspired make-up when she performs.
They continued their food, when a security guard with “a very aggressive tone” approached them. Harding shared that this “really overstepped a boundary because he is quite an intimidating—he is very large.”
Therefore, “For him to come over to a table with just a woman and her daughter eating breakfast to kind of like berate and scold us and say that he was going to complain, and tell me that I should be teaching my daughter to be better and that she’s badly educated and we should respect people’s privacy and we should not harass people and all of these other things.”
Following the incident, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Cavaliere, announced that he was banning Roan from performing at their series of international megashows, Todo Mundo no Rio. Watch Harding’s explanation video in full below.
