Boy George tells Chappell Roan to “cheer up girl” amid paparazzi incident
Boy George has poked fun at Chappell Roan after an incident in which she filmed paparazzi and accused them of “disrespecting all of my boundaries”.
After attending Alexander McQueen’s showcase at Paris Fashion Week on March 8th, the singer faced a barrage of paparazzi, whom she filmed in an effort to stop “following” and “harassing” her.
In the video, she can be heard saying, “When you’re disregarded as a human, this is what it’s like. I’m just trying to go to dinner, and I’ve asked these people several times to get away from me.”
Boy George has since weighed in on the matter, offering his opinion and experience with fame in a post on X.
He began, “It’s probably not helpful but I have been doing this fame thing for a while and you learn slowly and painfully that you don’t get a free pass once you turn yourself into a bird of paradise.”
He added that, after watching the video taken in Paris, he “laughed because I have kicked off at them many times. The trick is to own your fame. yes, it’s annoying at times but so is being ignored and told your a ‘has-been.”
Boy George added, “Life is always now and I think Chappell looks great but cheer up girl. The world is at your feet stop kicking it! It takes so much more time to say no to a picture or a signature.”
Using Roan’s own rhetoric, whereby the star said her boundaries had been “disregarded,” Boy George finished, “Boundaries are boring. Break them with the magic of kindness!”
Denise Welch, actor and mother of The 1975 frontman Matty Healy, endorsed the message, commenting “Amen to that,” on the post.
On the other end of the spectrum, Noah Kahan came to Roan’s defence on the matter. “They’re scummy, they’re manipulative, they’re parasitic – fuck ‘em. Seriously, fuck them,” the ‘Stick Season’ singer said online.
He went on to add, “Don’t feel bad for them. They’re not fans, they’re just businessmen trying to use human beings for profit and for their own gains.”
Roan has often used her platform to share her struggles to cope with fame and the intrusion of her privacy that the spotlight comes with.
