Chappell Roan addresses Jorginho backlash, says his daughter “did not deserve that”

Chappell Roan has addressed the backlash she received after footballer Jorginho accused her of mistreating his daughter at a hotel in São Paulo, saying that she was unaware of the situation and that his daughter “did not deserve that”.

Jorginho, who now plays for Flamengo and formerly played for Arsenal and Chelsea in England, accused Roan’s security team of acting aggressively towards his daughter during breakfast, before the singer was set to perform her set at Lollapalooza Brazil.

“My daughter woke up incredibly excited,” the Italian international wrote. “She even made a sign because she was so happy to see an artist she really admires, or used to admire.” Jorginho said his daughter recognised her at a table in the hotel, saying that she decided to walk past her to make sure “it was really her”.

“She just passed by the singer’s table, looked over to confirm it was her, smiled, and went back to the table with her mom,” he wrote, adding that she “didn’t say anything” or “ask for anything” as she walked past Roan. Jorginho said a “large” member of Roan’s security team then approached their table and spoke “extremely aggressively” to his wife and daughter, resulting in her getting “scared” and crying “a lot”.

Roan has now told “my half of the story of what happened” on Instagram Stories, saying that the security guard was “not my personal security” and that she “didn’t even see a woman and a child”.

She continued, “No one came up to me, no one bothered me. I was just sitting at breakfast in my hotel. I think these people were staying at the hotel as well. I did not ask the security guard to go up and talk to this mother and child, they did not come up to me, they were not doing anything.”

Adding, “It’s unfair for security to assume someone doesn’t have good intentions when they have no reason to believe, because there is no action even taken. I do not hate people who are fans of my music; I do not hate children. That is crazy. I am sorry to the mother and child; if you felt uncomfortable, you did not deserve that.”

Following her incident with Jorginho, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Cavaliere, announced that he was banning Roan from performing at their series of international megashows, Todo Mundo no Rio.

This comes amid ongoing discourse around Roan’s relationship with the media, following a recent incident in Paris when she berated paparazzi for overstepping her boundaries and disregarding her “as a human”.
