Jonathan Majors receives sentence for domestic violence charge

Marvel star Jonathan Majors has avoided prison time after being sentenced to a treatment programme for a year after being found guilty of a domestic assault offence in 2023.

On December 18th, a six-person jury in New York found Majors guilty of reckless assault in the third degree and guilty of a further charge of harassment of Grace Jabbari. Additionally, the actor was found not guilty of one count of assault in the third degree and not guilty of aggravated assault in the second degree.

Majors was previously set to discover his sentencing on February 6th, but the date was postponed until April 8th due to “a slew of post-conviction motions” filed by the lawyers representing the Hollywood star. He could have been sentenced to a year in prison, however, this was unlikely because of his lack of a criminal record.

However, Majors has been sentenced to attend the treatment programme, and a permanent order of protection has also been implemented, preventing him from making any contact with Jabbari.

If the actor doesn’t complete the programme, he could possibly face a maximum of six months in prison. Furthermore, if he violates any of the conditions of his sentencing, including making contact with Jabbari, Majors may face a maximum of 364 days in jail, according to Deadline.

Ahead of his sentencing, Jabbari said in a statement to the court room: “He will do this again. This is a man who thinks he is above the law.”

Additionally, she has also filed a defamation lawsuit against Majors, and in the document, she claims the Creed star “called her a liar at every turn and very specifically claimed that he has never put his hands on a woman, with the goal of convincing the world that Grace is not a victim of domestic abuse but instead a crazy liar who should be treated as such.”

Majors is yet to comment on his sentencing, but broke his silence in January by appearing on Good Morning America. Reflecting on receiving his guilty verdict, he told host Linsey Davis: “I’m standing there and the verdict comes down. I say, ‘How is that possible based off the evidence, based off the prosecution’s evidence, let alone our evidence? How is that possible?’”

He also claims it left him feeling “shocked and afraid”, before maintaining that he wouldn’t be physically violent towards a women because he’s aware of his own strengths, claiming, “I’m an athlete. I’m a sportsman. I know my body. I know how it moves. I know my strength, or lack thereof, you know? None of that was employed on her.”

This is a developing story.
