‘John Wick 5’ officially confirmed with Keanu Reeves to return

John Wick 5 is official, with Keanu Reeves confirmed to return as the titular assassin and Chad Stahelski again taking up directing duties.

After years of speculation about the status of a fifth movie, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson told a packed audience at CinemaCon that Baba Yaga may not be as dead as he seemed at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4. Lionsgate is developing the picture with Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee as producers.

“Keanu, Chad, Basil and Erica would not return unless they had something truly phenomenal and fresh to say with these characters and this world,” Fogelson assured fans. “We can’t wait for audiences to see where the journey takes us next.”

Iwanyk and Lee added, “It’s so important to get this story right and give John’s story the proper next step. It’s exciting to take the first step on that road.”

It’s been more than two years since Chapter 4 hit cinemas and banked an impressive $440 million, so it always seemed like a matter of time before Wick was brought back, despite the film ending with a shot of his grave.

However, Reeves denied the possibility of a fifth movie as recently as March, telling Extra, “You know, the character’s dead. He died in John Wick: Chapter 4. I know, in Hollywood, you can…I know, I know, it’s the Hollywood story. Right now, there isn’t [any plans for a return].”

Having said that, it has already been confirmed that Reeves will play Wick in the upcoming spinoff Ballerina, which stars Ana de Armas and is scheduled for release on June 6th, 2025. That isn’t the only franchise extension on its way, either. Donnie Yen is set to reprise his role of the blind assassin Caine in a spinoff movie he is also directing, while Shannon Tindle is working on an anime prequel series, to which Reeves will lend his voice.
