John Lydon details awkward encounter with Donald Trump: “I met him once and did not like him”
John Lydon has detailed an awkward encounter he once had with US President Donald Trump, saying: “I met him once and did not like him”.
The frontman made the comments in a recent interview with The Mirror, in which he expressed a dislike for him following their one and only meeting, recalling an experience where he ran into him at an awards ceremony.
Lydon told the newspaper: “I met him once and I did not like him. I met him at the VH1 music awards. I had a show called Rotten Radio and I was invited. My lovely wife came with me. Trump was going in with Jennifer Lopez and Nora [Lydon’s late wife] trod on her dress and tore the train and they went nuts on us. It was a gorgeous fiasco. Trump is the Sex Pistols of politics.”
It comes eight years after the Public Image Limited musician appeared on Good Morning Britain and infamously said of Trump: “There are many, many problems with him as a human being but […] there just might be a chance something good will come out of that situation because he terrifies politicians. This is a joy to behold for me. Dare I say, [he could be] a possible friend.”
Although he has changed his mind over these comments various times over the course of the ensuing years, Lydon now seems firmer on his disapproval of the American president, at least in a personal capacity.
Despite this, he previously stated in 2020 that he would vote for Trump in that year’s presidential election, as he deemed Joe Biden “incapable” of leading America.
Lydon is currently undertaking a speaking tour of the UK called Untamed, Unscripted, and Uncensored, where he will next perform at the King George Hall in Blackburn on November 12th.
