Triple J, the Aussie radio station leading the scene down under, have a long time feature on their shows which is the wonderfully titled ‘Like A Version’ piece. It involves artists taking on well known tracks in their own way, a la Live Lounge for the Brits among us.
We’ve seen some great covers from bands taking part, Alex Lahey and Julia Jacklin are particular recent favourites. But when rapper Joey Badass stepped up to the plate we were a little nervous. Little did we know he was about to knock it out the park.
Last year saw Joey released his new album All-Amerikkkan Bada$$. Shortly thereafter, he dropped three new songs, ‘Love Is Only a Feeling,’ ‘Too Lit,’ and ‘500 Benz,’ all of which were produced by Statik Selektah.
The Brooklyn rapper took a big swing when attempting to cover Prince’s brilliant, enigmatic and mercurial track ‘When Doves Cry’, and damn he hit it out the stratosphere. Aptly titled ‘When Thugs Cry’ Joey goes in with a full live band and something so slinky it will make your clothes fall off.
