Joan Baez blames “incompetent billionaires” for ruining America

Singer-songwriter Joan Baez has claimed that democracy in the United States has been placed under threat due to “incompetent billionaires”.

Baez made the comments on March 12th during an appearance on the season premiere of comedian John Mulaney’s new talk show, Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney. The iconic musician took the conversation into her own hands to deliver a passionate speech.

Before giving an anecdote about Martin Luther King Jr, Baez decided to “set the context” about the ongoing situation in the United States with Donald Trump and Elon Musk in power.

Although she didn’t refer to the duo by name, Baez told Mulaney: “You said I could say anything I want out here. We’re all here to be silly and have fun, and as long as we recognise the fact that our democracy is going up in flames…we’re being run by a bunch of really incompetent billionaires.”

Later in the conversation, Baez revealed that she once owned a Tesla but no longer has the vehicle and hated it, telling Mulaney, “I hated that thing. But I thought I was supposed to like it. So I drove off in it. Within 45 minutes I had smashed it into an oak tree on my property…I was thinking, ‘That’s a sign.'”

Baez was recently portrayed by Monica Barbaro in the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet. Barbaro was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance and Baez said of the actor’s role: “I loved what she did in the film.”

Meanwhile, Barbaro said of playing Baez, “If I didn’t think she was good at it, I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it in general. But she looked enough like me and she had my gestures down. You could tell who it was. She worked so hard. Kudos to her for taking the role on.”
