Jimmy Buffett’s widow attempts to remove financial adviser from $275 million estate
The widow of Jimmy Buffett has attempted to remove a financial adviser from overseeing the late singer’s $275 million estate, as she no longer believes he is acting in good faith.
Jane Buffett asked a judge in West Palm Beach, Florida, on July 21st, to stop attempts from the adviser, Richard Mozenter, to remove her as a trustee of the estate, and instead sought an order removing him from overseeing the estate, according to The Guardian.
Singer Buffett died almost two years ago, in September 2023, at the age of 76. He has an estate containing his musical exports and the financial dealings of his Margaritaville restaurant and resort empire.
His widow has been engaged in a legal battle with Mozenter for a significant period. The dispute centres on which one of them owns the right to control the trust. Both have been accusing the other of mishandling monetary assets in lawsuits filed in California and Florida.
Jane Buffet’s attempt to remove the financial adviser from the estate stemmed from a petition she planned to file at the end of May, stating that she would seek action if he did not resign from his position by the start of June.
She has accused Mozenter of “repeatedly” failing to inform her of various assets and investments within the trust, as well as taking “unreasonable fees and costs in the context of the services provided”.
However, Mozenter failed to bow to this request by the given date of June 2nd, as he claimed he was brought on board to the trust as Buffett was concerned by his wife’s ability to control his assets while he was still alive.
In response, her attorney Matt Porpora said: “Jane will not play into Mr Mozenter’s hands by litigating this dispute in two separate courts across the country, which would drain the very trust money that Jimmy specifically set aside for her care.”
At this time, Mozenter has not made any public comments regarding the latest developments in the case.
