Jamie Foxx to turn personal medical problems into new show
In an effort to confront the speculation about his health problems head-on, Jamie Foxx will be returning to his roots and taking to the stage to address the situation from his perspective.
The actor was hospitalised in April 2023 with an unnamed “medical complication”, which kept him out of the spotlight for months. Rumours began to run rampant over the precise nature of the Academy Award winner’s ailment, something he hasn’t spoken about with any degree of specificity.
However, during an appearance at the African American Film Critics Association’s Special Achievement Awards luncheon, Foxx revealed that not only is he going to be offering a first-hand perspective on his medical issues, but he’ll be using his background in stand-up comedy to do it.
“Everybody wants to know what happened, and I’m going to tell you what happened. But I’ve gotta do it in my way,” he said. “I’m gonna do it in a funny way. We’re gonna be on the stage. We’re gonna get back to the stand-up sort of roots.”
There were many unfounded and unconfirmed reports on the severity of his condition making the rounds, something Foxx acknowledged as he explained that he will be leaning into both fact and fiction as part of the new production.
“It’ll be called What Had Happened Was, and it’s got all the things that happened, especially on our side of our community,” he continued. “I dove out of a car to save this Black woman’s purse. That ain’t no damn Jamie, that’s a clone!”
Foxx only returned to the public eye in December before returning to work alongside Cameron Diaz on Netflix action comedy Back in Action the following month, but he’s already outlined his intentions to transform his very real medical problems into a light-hearted stage show.
