Jamie Dornan went into hiding due to “ridicule” of ’50 Shades of Grey’

Jamie Dornan has revealed he was decided to hide away from the public following the onslaught of “ridicule” he received following 50 Shades fo Grey.

While the part of Christian Grey in the literary adaptation of 50 Shades of Grey enhanced his profile and standing in the industry, the scathing reviews that greeted the opening instalment proved to be a double-edged sword.

Director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s movie may have hauled in $570million from cinemas, but on the other side of the coin, it would be rewarded with five Golden Raspberry Awards, including a ‘Worst Actor’ gong for Dornan and a ‘Worst Screen Combo’ prize shared alongside co-star Dakota Johnson.

It was the highs and lows of success encapsulated in a single film, leaving the actor to shut himself off from the external buzz. “I think I hid”, Dornan recalled when asked by Desert Island Discs how he processed the negativity that greeted Fifty Shades of Grey.

“I was coming off the back of career-altering reviews for The Fall and BAFTA nominations and all the madness The Fall brought… to ridicule,” he explained.

Revealing that several of the key creatives “shut ourselves off from the world for a little bit”, Dornan’s predicament was only exacerbated when the final two chapters in the trilogy were almost instantly given the go-ahead by studio Universal.

“It was a strange thing because there’s a bit of ridicule here and now I’m contracted to do two more. Knowing that there will be much more damnation to come,” he continued.

Elsewhere in the conversation, he said of his thoughts before auditioning for the starring role in The Fall: “If I get this, this will change the course of my career.’ I was right. It did. It literally changed my career overnight.”
