James Gunn provides positive update on new ‘Wonder Woman’ movie: “It’s moving”

DC Studios chief James Gunn has confirmed that a new Wonder Woman movie is currently in the writing stage.

In a new interview with EW, the DC chief explained that the ongoing process is “slow moving, but it’s moving”. The filmmaker added that a new Wonder Woman movie is “being written right now”, which suggests it’s still far from the production stage.

In December 2022, DC previously announced that the franchise would not proceed with a third film after Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of the studios.

At the time, Gunn solemnly announced: “There would be an unavoidable transitional period as we moved into telling a cohesive story across film, TV, animation, and gaming. The drawbacks of that transitional period were dwarfed by the creative possibilities and the opportunity to build upon what has worked in DC so far and to help rectify what has not.”

He also took to X to tell fans of the franchise the decision was made for long-term reasons, writing, “Everything we do is done in the service of the STORY & in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives”.

Following the decision, Gal Gadot, who starred as Wonder Woman in the last two movies, said, “The fact that I don’t have to sit still at home and just wait for the next offer is something that makes me feel empowered. I’m not only going to do my own projects, I’m going to work as an actress-for-hire still.”

While Gunn is yet to cast his lead for the upcoming Wonder Woman movie, he told EW that the character is one of the four main pillars of DC, alongside Superman, Batman, and Supergirl. “I wouldn’t say only those four characters, but I would say that those four characters are incredibly important to us. Right now, I feel great about where two of those characters are, and then we’re dealing with the other two,” he shared.

Due to Wonder Woman only being in the process of being written, there is still no information regarding a release timeline, casting or a director being attached to the project.
