James Gunn provides huge update on ‘Superman’ sequel
James Gunn has provided an update on the next instalment in the new Superman universe.
Earlier in August, the CEO of Warner Bros Discovery, David Zaslav, announced during the company’s earnings call that Gunn was again set to take the helm on the studio’s “next instalment in the Super-Family.” At the time, it was not clear whether was related to Superman itself.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn was asked about the status of his next Superman instalment. He confirmed the speculation, answering, “I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the Superman Saga. The treatment is done, which means a very, very worked out treatment.”
He added, “I’m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.” His interesting use of the phrase “Superman saga” suggests it won’t be a straight sequel, but rather a re-imagining of sorts, or a plot adjacent to the 2025 offering.
This comes as a result of the soaring Superman box office numbers. In late July, the movie officially became the highest-grossing superhero film of 2025, surpassing all other superhero movies released this year at the box office. Additionally, Supergirl is due to arrive in June 2026, after filming wrapped earlier this summer.
Despite this, director Gunn has said that “anti-American sentiment” has negatively affected ‘Superman’ internationally. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn discussed how the new movie was performing better domestically than internationally.
Musing on potential reasons, he said, “It also affects things that we have a certain amount of anti-American sentiment around the world right now. It isn’t really helping us. So I think it’s just a matter of letting something grow.”
Elsewhere in the Superman universe, Dean Cain, who played Superman on television during the 1990s, has revealed his plans to become an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Donald Trump’s administration.
