‘Superman’ passes all other 2025 superhero movies at box office
The new Superman movie is officially the highest-grossing superhero film of 2025, surpassing all other superhero movies released this year at the box office.
David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, and others star in James Gunn’s new movie, which intends to launch the new DC Universe.
Superman surpassed Thunderbolts* at the box office last weekend; Thunderbolts* made $382.1million worldwide at the end of its theatrical run, whereas the new Superman is currently at $472.4 million globally. This is split by a $271.7million domestic performance and a $200.7m worldwide.
This also means that it has surpassed Captain America: Brave New World, which grossed $415.1m at the end of its theatrical run.
Gunn’s project faces new competition, with the recent release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps on July 25th. After its first weekend, the film sits at $57m domestically and $106m worldwide. These numbers indicate it is likely to provide stiff competition.
Though Superman has grossed an incredible amount at the box office, it needs to continue to perform well in order to recoup all costs. Production was $225m, so the film broke even at $450m. However, with $125m marketing costs, it will need to make $600m.
Elsewhere, director Gunn has said that “anti-American sentiment” has negatively affected ‘Superman’ internationally. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn discussed how the new movie was performing better domestically than internationally. Musing on why this might be, he said, “It also affects things that we have a certain amount of anti-American sentiment around the world right now. It isn’t really helping us. So I think it’s just a matter of letting something grow.”
Additionally, there have been some negative comments in the USA. Superman has been criticised for being “woke”, according to actor Dean Cain, who played the superhero in the 1990s TV show Lois and Clarke: The New Adventures of Superman. However, he has since said that these comments were misconstrued.
Superman is in cinemas now. Watch the full trailer below.
