James Gunn gives update on new Batman casting: “Somethings have changed”
James Gunn, the head of the DC universe and celebrated comic book filmmaker has given an update on the much-anticipated casting of the new Batman.
When discussing the upcoming Batman film, The Brave And The Bold, Gunn admitted that there were a number of actors who were in the running for the role.
James Gunn formally worked with the MCU and helped create one of their most successful film series, Guardians of the Galaxy. He has since left the MCU to help reboot the DCEU, which includes casting new actors to play beloved characters. Following the success of his recent film, Superman, fans are eagerly awaiting news on what Gunn has in store for the comic book universe.
Batman is yet to be featured in the DCEU (it’s worth noting, The Batman, starring Robert Pattison playing the titular role, is a separate story to anything Gunn is working on). Gunn has confirmed that he is working on an adaptation of The Brave And The Bold storyline, which will see the hero fight alongside his son, who eventually becomes the other much-loved character, Robin.
Fans have used the storyline to try to narrow down Batman selections. During an interview with IGN, Gunn was asked if the actor playing Batman would be in his late 30s, as this would make him old enough to have a son that can fight alongside him.
“No, I think you have to wait to see the movie,” said Gunn, “Some things have changed. Plenty of things are in flux on what his situation is with his parentage and all that stuff, so I wouldn’t take any of it (for granted).”
Gunn continued speaking about the number of actors who are interested in playing Batman. “Listen, first of all, I can’t tell you the amount of big actors that have told me they want to be Batman,” he said, “I think you’d have a harder time finding actors who don’t want to be Batman. He’s the one character everyone wants to play. That’s the truth.”
This is a developing story.
