James Corden reveals how Paul McCartney’s generosity saved final ‘Gavin and Stacey’ episode

James Corden has explained how an act of generosity from Paul McCartney saved the final episode of Gavin and Stacey last Christmas.

The classic British sitcom, which initially ran for three series between 2007 and 2010, returned on Christmas Day in 2024 for one last episode, which was watched by a record-breaking 12.3 million people in the UK.

In one pivotal scene of the episode, Neil the Baby, the son of Corden’s character Smithy, delivered an emotional cover of The Beatles’ classic ‘Blackbird’, which almost didn’t make the show due to financial constraints.

Per the BBC, Corden explained in the new book, When Gavin Met Stacey And Everything In Between, “In terms of getting permission to use the song, the BBC have a licensing agreement which is great for UK transmissions of music.”

However, Corden continued, “I think The Beatles sit outside of that, which we didn’t know, and it’s so expensive if you want to use one of their songs.”

Therefore, Corden, who previously had McCartney as a guest on Carpool Karaoke on The Late Late Show, personally wrote to the Beatle to see if he could pull any strings to allow them to use ‘Blackbird’ in the episode, explaining, “I wrote just telling him that I felt this was a pivotal moment in the show and that I would never request anything if I thought it was going to be in any way derogatory.”

Beautifully, McCartney came to the rescue and ensured that Gavin and Stacey had the send off that it deserved.

Corden shared, “He said in his email that he was so touched and honoured, and he would love nothing more than this to happen, and they’d do everything in their power to make sure it could, and then, within 20 hours, it was done, and we had clearance to use the song.”

While Gavin and Stacey has now reached its conclusion, Corden is reportedly set to join forces again with the show’s co-star and co-creator, Ruth Jones, for a new television series, The Choir, on Apple TV.

Plot details are said to revolve around a character called Ben returning to his quiet home town due to an unfortunate event, having lived abroad for several years, and confronting his sibling, Lisa, who he has not seen since he disappeared.
