James Corden and Ruth Jones to reunite for new ‘Gavin and Stacey’ Christmas special
James Corden and Ruth Jones’ hit BBC sitcom, Gavin and Stacey, is set to return for a new Christmas special in 2024.
The programme, which also stars Mathew Horne and Joanna Page as the fictional titular couple, initially ran for three series between 2007 and 2010. After a nine-year hiatus from television screens, Gavin and Stacey returned in 2019, ending on a cliffhanger that now looks to finally be resolved in the upcoming special.
According to Deadline, a new episode, written by Corden and Jones who also play Smithy and Nessy respectively, is set to be filmed this summer. As of writing, the forthcoming Christmas special is in the development and pre-production stage.
After spending eight years as the host of The Late Late Show in the United States, which ran for over 1,200 episodes, Corden returned to England in 2023 and has been out of the limelight since stepping down from the nightly CBS talk show.
In 2022, Corden played down the possibility of another Gavin and Stacey special, telling BBC Radio 2’s Vernon Kay: “I wish I could say it’s up to me. The best thing about Gavin & Stacey is that it’s Ruth and I, and if I’m being completely honest, her judgement is exceptional.”
“I am going to have a bit more free time as of next year and that will open some time for us to just be together, I hope. But honestly, I’m so touched every time I get here when people ask about it. It’s amazing,” he added.
Corden continued: “It’s incredible how people care about those characters in the show. It’s so great and I realise the ending of that special does very definitely tease something else. But it’s always been the two of us… and we can’t write separately. We’ve never been able to write over Zoom or anything at all. We’ve just got to be in a room together, talking with a pack of Post-It Notes and a pen and at some point we get a laptop out, but that’s even way down the line.”
