“I think I might have miffed him”: What is the issue between Christopher Nolan and Al Pacino?

Given that Christopher Nolan continually works with some of the greatest actors of all time, there are some people he hasn’t ticked off his collaborative wish list.

The director has frequently worked with the likes of Michael Caine, Robert Pattinson, Morgan Freeman and Anne Hathaway, who have all given career-defining performances in films such as Interstellar, Tenet and The Dark Knight. However, the director definitely has his favourites, and there are many actors who would love the opportunity to work with him, with Al Pacino expressing enthusiasm in working with him again, but he has a distinct feeling that this might not happen.

Al Pacino is one of the few Hollywood legends, with staggering performances in The Godfather, Scarface and Dog Day Afternoon, becoming one of the definitive leading men of his generation. However, the actor also played a big part in the beginning of Nolan’s career after starring in his 2002 film Insomnia.

Insomnia came immediately after the success of Memento, with the director working with Pacino and Robin Williams on the dark and gritty story of two Los Angeles detectives who are sent to a northern town to investigate the murder of a young girl. The story feels more akin to the work of David Fincher, with a psychological core as it explores the inner world of a bad police officer who considers himself to be good. While it is predictable at points, it is still very compelling, with Nolan showing an early knack for rich story worlds that explore cynical thematic strands relating to corruption and morality.

Williams is perhaps a surprising choice for a project of this kind, but Pacino slots into this universe very well despite not being given another opportunity to star in one of his films. When asked about this, Pacino said, “He hasn’t offered me a film in a while, you know why? I’ll tell you why. He asked me to be in this movie, and I didn’t do it. I think that might have miffed him a little bit, but I’m being presumptuous myself”.

While it isn’t known which film the actor was offered a role in, it would be surprising if Nolan had simply crossed him off the list for not being involved in one project. Immediately following on from Insomnia, Nolan directed The Batman Begins, the first in which Christian Bale reprised this iconic role and the beginning of a long collaboration with Caine and Gary Oldman.

The Batman Begins marked Nolan’s descent into becoming the biggest studio conglomerate of all time, with his stamp on the superhero movie leading to a colossal career of blockbuster films. It is unclear as to what caused Pacino to turn down the role, but he would undoubtedly still make a good fit within the Nolan universe.

The director has recently been casting for his latest project, which as an adaptation of The Odyssey starring Tom Holland. Nolan is branching out for this project, working with a surprising mix of actors such as Zendaya, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong’o, but despite this, Pacino has yet to be seen within another of his films.
