“I didn’t have anything else”: understanding why Al Pacino decided to make ‘Jack and Jill’
Al Pacino is known for being one of the great Hollywood legends, with roles in iconic films like The Godfather, Dog Day Afternoon, Scarface and Heat, defining an era of cinema and on-screen masculinity with his wounded and deeply vulnerable characters. However, as detailed in his memoir Sonny Boy, the actor experienced some financial turmoil down the line that sent all his earnings down the drain, forcing him to take on roles he might not otherwise have accepted in a desperate need to replete his bank account.
While this was undeniably a very stressful experience for Pacino, it led to some bizarre and unexpected on-screen collaborations that probably wouldn’t have existed otherwise, with one in particular standing out.
Adam Sandler is known for his unique brand of humour that often revolves around childish characters in odd situations that are escalated to extreme lengths, earning him a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most notorious comedians. He built his career starring in films like Billy Madison, The Wedding Singer and Happy Gilmore, but the actor surprised audiences with his incredible dramatic performances in Punch Drunk Love and Uncut Gems, with the latter showcasing a dazzling charisma and feverous energy from Sandler as his character tries to wrangle himself away from the fallout of a high-stakes bet.
However, while the pairing of Sandler and Pacino seems unlikely, the pair worked together on the 2011 film Jack and Jill, directed by Dennis Dugan. It follows a family reunion gone wrong in which twin siblings Jack and Jill are forced to reconnect, with Sandler playing both siblings and Pacino weirdly playing himself.
When asked about the role, Pacino said, “Jack and Jill was the first film I made after I lost my money. To be honest, I did it because I didn’t have anything else. Adam Sandler wanted me, and they paid me a lot for it. So I went out and did it, and it helped. I love Adam; he was wonderful to work with and has become a dear friend. He also just happens to be a great actor and a hell of a guy.”
Countless collaborators of Sandler have praised him, describing his infectious love of filmmaking and down-to-earth quality, which is a rare occurrence in Hollywood. While the movie is a strange creative choice, it adds an edge to Pacino’s otherwise very serious filmography, showing a softer and less intimidating side to the actor.
In recent years, Pacino has starred in the likes of The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, with the actor describing how he offered to act in the latter for free because he was so enamoured by the work of Quentin Tarantino and willing to do anything to be a part of the story world. With a recent string of highly successful projects, it seems as though Pacino has recovered from his bout of financial uncertainty, and while many actors worry about their roles drying up as they age, Pacino proves that this isn’t always the case, and you can sustain longevity in your career if you take a risk and do something entirely unexpected.
