Irish singer-songwriter Talos dead at 37

The celebrated Cork singer-songwriter, Eoin French, better known by his stage name Talos, has sadly died at the age of 37.

At current, details surrounding the singer’s death are still emerging but, it is known that French had been privately battling with cancer in the run-up to his untimely passing.

The Irish musician passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 11th while at his home in Cork surrounded by family members and loved ones. His death was announced on social media by the singer’s team, who wrote, “It is with great sadness that we let you know that our friend Eoin French, known to many the world over as Talos, has passed away after a short illness.”

Writing on social media, French’s team also referred to him as a “true artist, a son, a husband, a father, and a friend” and, above all, a “beautiful soul”. The statement concluded, “We are devastated by his passing,” a warm sentiment that has been echoed by the entire Irish music community, for which Talos’ death is a great loss.

French had been destined for the music world from a very young age, taking up the piano at age five and learning guitar during his teens. For many people, the songwriter first rose to prominence as a member of the group Hush War Cry while French was studying architecture at University College Cork. Since 2013, he had been performing as Talos, but it was not until 2017 that he released an album under that name.

The release of his debut album, Wild Alee, quickly established French as one of Ireland’s most promising songwriters; a reputation that grew with every subsequent release. After his 2022 record, Dear Chaos, he was even nominated for ‘Irish Artist of the Year’, alongside Fontaines D.C., CMAT, and Dermot Kennedy, at the Choice Music Awards that year.

Outside of his contribution to music, French was a beloved member of the local community in Cork. When he was not on tour or in the studio, the singer-songwriter could be found delivering lectures at the Cork College of Architectural Education, or playing at Sunday Wells Rugby Club in the city.

His former teammates have since paid tribute to the loss of French, saying, “We were very saddened to hear of the passing of former player Eoin French (Frenchy) yesterday after a long illness… Thoughts go out to his family and friends during this time. May he rest in peace. Away the well.”

French’s management have since confirmed, “As was his wish, there will be new music from Talos to share with you all in the future.” Therefore, while his passing is incredibly devastating, his final wish is a testament to his tireless artistry and dedication to music.
