Pixies – ‘Indie Cindy’

Pixies have announced a new four-track record titled EP 1 as the band sign off on what has been an eventful summer for a number of reasons.

Coming off the back of their first release since 2004 in ‘Bagboy’, the Boston-based band have fully committed to another comeback by releasing the new EP in the hope they could announce a new full album for the first time since Trompe le Monde in 1991.

Notably, though, Pixies are now writing, recording and touring without bassist Kim Deal who announced she was leaving the band in June via their Facebook page: “We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years,” she said.

The statement continued. “Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.”

Deal, who joined Pixies after replying to an advert in the Boston Phoenix in 1986, formed The Breeders during a Pixies hiatus after the Surfer Rosa tour, tensions running high and band relations at an all-time low. Kim Deal will now be focusing on her solo material.

In the meantime, though, Black Francis teamed up with the rest of the band to record new material, but the Muffs’ Kim Shattuck looks set to fill Kim Deal’s illusive boots for the 2013 European tour that includes three dates in the UK.

EP 1 includes singles ‘Andro Queen’, ‘Another Toe in the Ocean’, ‘What Goes Boom’ and ‘Indie Cindy’. All were recorded at Rockfield Studios, Wales, and produced by Gil Norton, who played a hand in previous albums ‘Doolittle’, ‘Bossanova’ and ‘Trompe le Monde’.

‘Indie Cindy’, a relatively relaxed follow-up from the aforementioned ‘Bagboy’, is accompanied by a video produced by Lamar+Nik, telling the tale of a tragic love triangle starring Emily Matthews, Mark Johns and Miles Kollopoulos.
