First images released of Josh O’Connor and Alana Haim in ‘The Mastermind’

The first stills of Josh O’Connor and Alana Haim have been released in Kelly Reichardt’s upcoming film, The Mastermind, which will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month.

The film follows JB Mooney (played by O’Connor), an unemployed carpenter turned amateur thief living in rural Massachusetts in the 1970s, as he is upended after planning his first big heist. It is the first project from Reichardt since the release of Showing Up in 2022, with the director being known for her introspective style, as seen in films like Wendy and Lucy, Old Joy and Certain Women.

The director has showcased two of her films at the Cannes Film Festival, Showing Up and Wendy and Lucy, with the latter premiering in the Un Certain Regard category in 2008. Reichardt often focuses on socio-political themes through her signature reflective style, with many of them having an anti-capitalist undercurrent that is particularly prevalent in her 2019 film, First Cow.

Alana Haim is starring in two major releases this year. She is reuniting with Paul Thomas Anderson for One Battle After Another, which she worked on on Licorice Pizza in 2020. O’Connor will star in two films that are premiering at the festival. The other is The History of Sound, which has been described as a gay modern musical and also stars Paul Mescal.

O’Connor is following on from the huge success of La Chimera and Challengers in 2024. The director of the former, Alice Rohrwacher, has been announced as the President of the Camera d’Or Jury for this year’s festival.

While the release date has not yet been announced, Mubi will be distributing The Mastermind.
