ICE forced to remove post over use of MGMT song
The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have removed a social media post after they used an MGMT song to promote their services.
A post originally shared by the Department of Homeland Security has been taken down as a result of a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown request.
The post was originally shared on X on October 23rd. It depicted footage of federal agents arresting ICE protestors. In the background, a slowed remix of MGMT’s 2017 song ‘Little Dark Age’ played. The caption read: “End of the Dark Age, beginning of the Golden Age.”
The song gained a new life in 2021, when it went viral on TikTok. Since then, the tune has been linked to far-right and neo-Nazi creators. A report confirmed this, stating that it was “by far the most popular Sound among extremist creators on TikTok”.
MGMT have expressed their upset over the song’s usage elsewhere. In 2024, they hit out at the UK Conservative Party for using it in a General Election advert.
They have faced a similar takedown request before, after sharing a post featuring The Cure’s famous tune ‘Friday I’m In Love’ earlier in October.
ICE have been embroiled in another scandal, after the Trump administration lashed out at the NFL’s decision to have Bad Bunny as the halftime act at the Super Bowl in 2026. President Trump said of the decision, “I never heard of him, I don’t know who he is, I don’t know why they’re doing it, it’s like, crazy.”
As a result, Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security, has confirmed that ICE will attend the upcoming Bad Bunny performance at the Super Bowl. Bad Bunny has admitted before that he did not tour in the US for fear of ICE turning up at his shows. He has been a frequent criticiser of ICE.
