‘I Love New York’: Madonna stages surprise Times Square concert for Pride Month
Madonna has taken New Yorkers by surprise after staging an unexpected concert in the middle of Times Square for Pride Month.
The Queen of Pop appeared in the iconic central Big Apple location on June 4th, both as a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community and to promote her upcoming album, Confessions on A Dancefloor 2, which is being released next month.
According to People, the star graced the stage wearing a pink corset and silver boots, performing a range of hits from the original Confessions on a Dancefloor from 2005, before moving on to some new tunes.
The classics included songs like ‘Hung Up’, ‘Get Together’, and the fitting ‘I Love New York’, before turning her attention to new songs such as ‘Bring Your Love’, ‘I Feel So Free’ and ‘Love Sensation’.
As much as the surprise performance was a promotion of her first new material since 2019, Madonna also took time to acknowledge the significance of the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month, who have always made up a stalwart part of her fanbase.
“Hi, gays!” she remarked at one point, before showing a range of LGBTQ+ icons in pictures on the stage, including transgender Stonewall activist Marsha P Johnson, artist Keith Haring, and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
Ahead of the release of Confessions on a Dancefloor 2 on July 3rd, Madonna also recreated the seminal promotional shot being used for the album, resting a speaker between her legs while on stage.
It comes as the pop star’s first major performance since she made a guest appearance at Coachella in April during Sabrina Carpenter’s headline set, where they sang their duet single ‘Bring Your Love’ ahead of its release.
However, the moment ended in a small disaster for Madonna after the clothes she was wearing, the same outfit that she wore to her own Coachella slot 20 years ago, were stolen from the festival, and she had to publicly appeal to fans for their return.
