Horsegirl and Lifeguard deliver haunting rendition of The Stone Roses song ‘I Wanna Be Adored
Horsegirl and Lifeguard, bands with siblings Penelope and Isaac Lowenstein, have collaborated to deliver a haunting cover of The Stone Roses‘ timeless hit ‘I Wanna Be Adored’.
Lifeguard released two EPs on Matador this year, Crowd Can Talk and Dressed in Trenches. Meanwhile, Horsegirl’s debut and most recent album, Versions of Modern Performance, came out in 2022.
“It’s our debut bare-bones album in a Chicago institution with a producer who we feel like really respected what we were trying to do,” Horsegirl explained in a press release announcing Versions of Modern Performance.
The album’s producer, John Agnello, is one of the head engineers at Steve Albini’s legendary Electrical Audio studio in Chicago. Agnello has previous experience with artists spanning The Breeders to Dinosaur Jr.
Horsegirl and Lifeguard’s rendition of ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ carries a darker and more intense vibe compared to the original, yet it maintains its signature grandiose essence.
The Stone Roses initially released the track in 1989, and it quickly became a defining song of the Madchester and Britpop movements in the late 1980s and early ’90s. The original song stands out for its hypnotic and repetitive bass line, along with its captivating guitar work and enigmatic lyrics.
Between them, Horsegirl and Lifeguard have previously covered iconic tracks by bands like Guided By Voices, the Jam, and the Au Pairs.
