Happyness have released their latest double A-side effort in the form of ‘Montreal Rock Band Somewhere / It’s On You’ and it’s a charming piece of laconic 90’s summer vibes via Moshi Moshi Records.
The south London group have been on our radar for a little while now, their handling of Americana is to be admired as they dabble on the right side of ‘classic rock’ they continue to churn out piece of pure adolescent joy.
‘It’s On You’ is the perfect summation of this. It’s drenched in Weezer-esque guitar and is not too dissimilar to The Districts latest efforts. Melting young love and lackadaisical sonics to make a charming piece of alt-rock which brims with the vigour of youth.
‘Montreal Rock Band Somewhere’ is altogether more subdued and heartfelt. It hitches on its title as the a focal point for the protagonist as we again delve into the ideals of love and love-lost. It’s heavier on bass and delicate with its riffs. It also features NME’s favourite lyric of the year “I’m wearing Win Butler’s hair / There’s a scalpless singer in a Montreal rock band somewhere”.
What this all confirms is that Happyness are slowly finding their niche as the voice of the everyman. Or should we say everyboy/girl?
