Grimes reveals autism and ADHD diagnosis

Grimes has revealed that she has recently been diagnosed with ADHD and autism. In a lengthy statement on X. She also called out certain social media accounts that she deems “extreme infohazards.”

“Got diagnosed w ADHD / autism this year and realized I’m prob dyslexic which is why I can’t spell at all without spellcheck,” Grimes wrote on X, sharing the news with her fans. However, her statement was less about her own personal diagnosis and more about how having it earlier may have impacted her life.

“I feel like, had we known this when I was a child, I would have worked so much less hard, been on drugs, and so many of the weird obsessions and motivations I had would have been seen as pathological and I could have written off certain things that were very hard for me,” she said, discussing how living with these undiagnosed conditions affected her. She added, “but I’m glad I over came them.”

The musician then claimed that “mental illnesses be contagious”, stating that, despite recently getting her own diagnosis and sharing how it might have helped her to have it earlier, she doubts the validity of people’s claims to have ADHD.

She wrote, “ppl r self diagnosing. And also I feel a huge percentage of adhd is screen addiction and dopaminergic burn out.”

Grimes also commented on the way social media plays a role in modern understanding of conditions. “I think the nature of this uninformed social media mental health subculture is rly a big concern,” she wrote, “Some are great ofc but a lot of these seem like explicitly anti civilizational and geared towards making people worse.”

In the past, Grimes has been open about experimental things she’s done to try and help her mental health, including getting surgeries to eliminate blue light from her vision and taking a “360 approach” to her wellbeing.
