Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of ‘Narnia’ begins filming in the UK

The highly anticipated upcoming version of Narnia, directed by Greta Gerwig, has begun filming in the UK.

The movie is being shot mostly at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, but will also use certain other filming locations around the central London area.

Gerwig’s adaptation, fully titled Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, is set to star Emma Mackey, Daniel Craig, and Carey Mulligan in the lead roles. There are also significant rumours that Meryl Streep will be behind the voice of the film’s famous lion, Aslan.

The film is set to be released for a short theatrical run in IMAX in November next year, before hitting Netflix the following month around Christmas, although official release dates for both of these are yet to be confirmed.

The screenplay for the movie has been written by Gerwig herself. It is a direct adaptation of the original novel The Magician’s Nephew by CS Lewis, which served as the sixth novel in the Narnia franchise and a prequel to the series’ most beloved book, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

The Magician’s Nephew follows the story of two children as they enter into a then-unknown magical land, meet Aslan the lion for the first time, and subsequently witness Narnia being built for the first time.

In an interview about the project last year, Gerwig voiced her fears about putting her own spin on such a well-known franchise. “I loved Narnia so much as a child,” she explained. “As an adult, CS Lewis is a thinker and a writer. I’m intimidated by doing this. It’s something that feels like a worthy thing to be intimidated by.”

Details on further casting and release for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew are yet to be revealed.
