Carey Mulligan set to join cast of Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’
English actor Carey Mulligan is in talks to join the growing cast of Greta Gerwig‘s Narnia adaptation.
Gerwig’s project will see her take on The Magician’s Nephew, the sixth novel in The Chronicles of Narnia series. The upcoming movie, which will be written and directed by Gerwig, will be supported by Netflix in addition to a cinematic release.
Mulligan, if the deal is completed, will join Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep and Emma Mackey in Gerwig’s new production. She will play the ill mother of Digory, one of the two children in the movie.
It was previously reported that Charli XCX was lined up to play the White Witch in The Magician’s Nephew. However, that role is now believed to belong to Mackey. Meanwhile, Craig is set to play the Uncle and Streep will voice Aslan.
“I’m slightly in the place of terror because I really do have such reverence for Narnia,” Gerwig told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme of the project in 2024.
She continued: “I loved Narnia so much as a child. As an adult, C.S. Lewis is a thinker and a writer. I’m intimidated by doing this. It’s something that feels like a worthy thing to be intimidated by.”
Gerwig also noted: “As a non-British person, I feel a particular sense of wanting to do it correctly… it’s like when Americans do Shakespeare, there’s a slight feeling of reverence and as if maybe we should treat it with extra care. It is not our countryman.”
The upcoming film, which is in pre-production, is expected to arrive in cinemas in late 2026 for a run in IMAX theatres before landing on Netflix.
