Greta Gerwig to chair jury at Cannes Film Festival in 2024

Following the mammoth success of Barbie, which made her the first female director to make $1billion at the box office, Greta Gerwig is to head up the jury at Cannes Film Festival in 2024.

The 77th edition of the film festival is set to take place from May 14th to May 25th in the French city. In 2023, the jury was presided over by Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund, previous two-time Palme d’Or recipient and director of Triangle of Sadness.

In the past, acclaimed directors such as Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola have taken up the role throughout the years. However, Gerwig is the first female director from the United States to have the honour.

Iris Knobloch and Thierry Frémaux claimed that Gerwig was an “obvious choice” because she “audaciously embodies the renewal of world cinema, for which Cannes is each year both the forerunner and the sounding board.”

Speaking about her love for cinema and for Cannes, Gerwig shared, “I love films – I love making them, I love going to them, I love talking about them. As a cinephile, Cannes has always been the pinnacle of what the universal language of movies can be.”

The Lady Bird director continued, “Being in the place of vulnerability, in a dark theater filled with strangers, watching a brand-new film is my favorite place to be. I am stunned and thrilled and humbled to be serving as the president of the Cannes Film Festival Jury. I cannot wait to see what journeys are in store for all of us.”

Earlier this year, Gerwig unveiled her third film and biggest venture yet with Barbie. The film earned 22nd place on Far Out‘s ‘The 50 Best Movies of 2023’ list, finding praise for its themes of feminism, motherhood and womanhood.
