Grammys 2025: Prince and The Clash to be honoured with lifetime achievement awards

The Recording Academy has announced that Prince, The Clash, and Frankie Valli will receive ‘Lifetime Achievement’ awards during Grammys week.

The celebration of their respective careers will take place during the Special Merit Awards Ceremony, scheduled for February 1st at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles. The Grammys will then take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on the same date.

Frankie Beverly, Dr. Bobby Jones, Taj Mahal, and Roxanne Shante are the other artists set to receive ‘Lifetime Achievement’ awards. Meanwhile, Erroll Garner, Glyn Johns, and Tania León are to be rewarded with ‘Trustee’ awards. Dr Leo Beranek is the ‘Technical Grammy’ award honoree for 2025.

Beverly died earlier this year, so the award will be posthumous. Similarly, Prince and The Clash frontman Joe Strummer have also passed away, so their awards will also be posthumous. Meanwhile, Garner died in 1977.

The ‘Lifetime Achievement’ awards are exclusively for performers who have enhanced the recording industry. The ‘Trustee’ awards are typically for songwriters and producers, with performers excluded from this category. Lastly, the ‘Technical Grammy’ is a celebration of a figure who has pushed forward the field of recording through technical enhancement.

In a statement, Harvey Mason Jr, CEO of the Recording Academy, shared: “It’s an amazing privilege to honour this eclectic group of music icons during the year’s biggest week in music. Each of this year’s Special Merit Award recipients has left an indelible mark on music, from paving the way for others to innovation that forever has changed the trajectory of the musical landscape. We can’t wait to celebrate this group and their achievements in February.”

At next year’s Grammys, Beyoncé is the most-nominated artist, receiving a total of 11 nods which also makes her the most-nominated artist in the history of the awards ceremony.
