Grammys 2024: Boygenius wins ‘Best Alternative Album’ with ‘The Record’
At the 2024 Grammy Award ceremony, Boygenius took home the award for ‘Best Alternative Album’ for their effort, The Record. This comes shortly after the band announced their hiatus.
In total, the trio of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker were nominated for eight awards. Ultimately, aside from the ‘Best Alternative Album’ gong, they took home ‘Best Rock Performance’ and ‘Best Rock Song’ both for ‘Not Strong Enough’. Elsewhere at the ceremony, Taylor Swift broke a long-held record with her fourth ‘Album of the Year’ win.
At the ceremony, Boygenius were collectively clad in white suits with pink carnations. This was a nod to their lyrics that honour Elliott Smith, who once also wore a white suit to the ceremony in 1998. The lyrics from ‘We’re In Love’ state: “In the next one, will you find me? / I’ll be the boy with the pink carnation / Pinned to my lapel, who looks like hell and asks for help / And if you do, I’ll know it’s you.”
In a review of the album, Far Out said: ”Living up to hype is one thing. Succeeding it is another. But The Record somehow goes beyond those metrics – it could very well be the best album that all three singers have made to date, and there’s a chance that it could be the best album that they ever make.”
Continuing: ”With no egos and more talent than some small countries, The Record is what happens when three people at the height of their collective powers come together and create something bigger than the sum of its parts.”
The nominees in the ‘Best Alternative Album’ were Arctic Monkeys – The Car, Gorillaz – Cracker Island, Lana Del Rey – Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, and PJ Harvey – I Inside the Old Year Dying, but none of them were enough to challenge the supergroup.
