Grammys 2024: Boygenius win three awards for ‘The Record’ and ‘Not Strong Enough’
The 66th edition of the Grammys saw Boygenius, the all-female supergroup of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, win three awards.
In a five-star review of their debut album The Record, Far Out said of the triple Grammy award-winning album, “Living up to hype is one thing. Succeeding it is another. But The Record somehow goes beyond those metrics – it could very well be the best album that all three singers made to date, and there’s a chance that it could be the best album that they ever make.”
On February 4th at the Cyrpto.com Arena in Los Angeles, the Recording Academy of the United States recognised Boygenius’s outstanding contribution to music in 2023 by awarding them ‘Best Alternative Music Album,’ ‘Best Rock Performance’ and ‘Best Rock Song’.
Bridgers said as she walked on stage with Dacus and Baker to accept the ‘Best Alternative Music Album’ award, “What the hell, this is so incredible, we’re just screaming backstage. It’s just been a constant scream.” The trio beat Arctic Monkeys, Gorillaz, Lana Del Rey and PJ Harvey to the prize.
Meanwhile, the other nominees for ‘Best Rock Performance’ were Arctic Monkeys with ‘Sculptures of Anything Goes,’ Black Pumas with ‘More Than a Love Song,’ Foo Fighters with ‘Rescued’ and Metallica with ‘Lux Aeterna.’ However, Boygenius ruled victorious with ‘Not Strong Enough.’
Finally, they also beat Olivia Rodrigo, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age and The Rolling Stones to pick up the award for ‘Best Rock Song,’ with ‘Not Strong Enough.’ “All I ever wanted to do in my life was be in a band,” said Baker in her acceptance speech, “I feel like music is the language I used to find my family since I was a kid, I just wanna say thank to everybody who ever watched me play, and to these guys for touring in a freaking van, and a Prius…”
Their prize haul arrives days after the group announced a hiatus and return to their solo careers at an intimate show in LA. “This is our last show, and we’re feeling it,” confirmed Dacus during their acoustic set, which featured tracks such as ‘Satanist,’ ‘Black Hole,’ and the now Grammy-Award-winning ‘Not Strong Enough.’
The hiatus does seem to be only temporary as Dacus proclaimed to the crowd at their LA show, “This is our last song,” before Baker quickly followed up with, “Not ever.”
