Boygenius announce their hiatus at Los Angeles show

Boygenius are set to return to their solo careers after announcing a hiatus during an intimate Los Angeles show on February 1st.

The supergroup recently announced two ‘secret’ acoustic shows in Los Angeles to celebrate their Grammys week. At the ceremony on February 4th, Boygenius are nominated for ‘Album of the Year’, ‘Record of the Year’, ‘Alternative Album of the Year’, ‘Alternative Music Performance’, ‘Rock Performance’ and ‘Rock Song’.

At the concert at The Smell on February 1st, the band appeared to confirm that they were taking a break from the group on stage, according to those in attendance who took to social media.

Lucy Dacus reportedly said on stage, “This is our last show, and we’re feeling it.” They played a set list of songs from The Record and their recent The Rest EP, including ‘Cool About It’, ‘Satanist’, ‘Black Hole’ and ‘Powers’.

Talk of their hiatus has been happening for a while. As a supergroup of three solo artists, Dacus, Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers, the musicians were always going to return to their own projects, at some point.

“I do fear [the end],” Bridgers told GQ when the topic of returning to their own work came up, with Dacus adding, “I’ve been thinking about how, after our tour in 2018 ended, we were all depressed, right?”

However, it does seem to merely be a hiatus and not a total end to the band. As they played their last song of the secret show, Dacus said “this is our last song”, to which Baker reportedly was quick to add, “not ever”.

In a five-star review, Far Out wrote of The Record: “Living up to hype is one thing. Succeeding it is another. But The Record somehow goes beyond those metrics – it could very well be the best album that all three singers have made to date, and there’s a chance that it could be the best album that they ever make.”
