Grammy-nominated singer claims young women in music industry are “so sexualised”

Grammy-nominated singer Belinda Carlisle has publicly criticised the sexualisation of “young women in the music industry”.

Speaking with The i, Carlisle mused, “These days, young women in the music industry are just so sexualised. Like, what happened? I don’t get it. It’s not empowering – it’s embarrassing.”

Carlisle gained fame as the lead vocalist of The Go-Go’s, a highly successful all-female rock band. Carlisle’s solo career has since afforded her mainstream success.

She said that female pop stars might feel great now, but will soon regret their decision. “Yes, you will get attention, but not the right kind, and down the line, you are going to look back and say, ‘Wish I hadn’t done that,‘” she shared.

Carlisle also said, “I mean: Dua Lipa? It’s shocking! She’s so talented. She doesn’t need to do that.”

This year, Dua Lipa has continued her Radical Optimism tour, which spans across the globe throughout 2025 and concludes in Seattle in October.

Recently, the ‘Physical’ singer was hailed as the best feminist role model of our times by author and musician Patti Smith, who called her, “fun-loving, she cares about people – that’s in parallel to having a real thirst for knowledge. She’s not afraid to speak up for displaced people.”

After Adele, Dua Lipa has become only the second female performer to headline Wembley Stadium. She played two nights at the iconic venue earlier this summer.

As for Carlisle, the singer-songwriter has a handful of shows coming up across Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and Manchester this coming September.
