Patti Smith believes Dua Lipa is the ultimate role model: “She would not steer you wrong”
Music legend Patti Smith has crowned pop star Dua Lipa the best feminist role model of our times.
A new British Vogue piece revealed the kind words the ‘Because the Night’ singer bestowed upon Dua Lipa. “If you were going to choose her as some type of role model, she would not steer you wrong,” says Patti Smith, who Dua has previously interviewed for her book club.
The Just Kids writer expanded, “You know, she’s fun-loving, she cares about people – that’s in parallel to having a real thirst for knowledge. She’s fighting to seek protection from AI, which is something that affects all of us. She’s not afraid to speak out for displaced people.”
Smith finished her litany of compliments, stating, “She’s very independent, she’s interested in many cultural topics. She really takes hold of being alive. It’s exciting to watch someone continue to grow.”
Dua Lipa was one of 300 UK public figures who signed an open letter addressed to the UK’s “complicity” in the crisis in Gaza. “We urge you to take immediate action to end the UK’s complicity in the horrors in Gaza,” the letter begins. “Right now, children in Gaza are starving while food and medicine sit just minutes away, blocked at the border. Words won’t feed Palestinian children – we need action.”
The ‘Levitating’ singer has also signed an open letter, spearheaded by Elton John, urging Sir Keir Starmer to update AI laws. The letter stresses that failing to provide that protection would mean they would “give away” their work to tech firms.
Lipa previously stated her admiration for Smith when referencing her beloved best-selling book. “I’d have loved to be part of such a cool era,” the singer said. “Patti gives us the next best thing – possibly the most spellbinding account of New York in the ’70s ever written.”
