Golden Globes 2025: Nikki Glaser announced as host of ceremony
Stand-up comedian Nikki Glaser has been announced as the host of the forthcoming Golden Globes, scheduled to take place on January 5th, 2025.
The upcoming ceremony marks the 82nd annual Golden Globes, with the stars of the television and film industry uniting for a night of celebration. The event acts as a vital part of the awards season, often providing a key indicator of the selection of movies are set to dominate at the Baftas and the Academy Awards.
This year, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer was named ‘Best Picture’, as it did at the Oscars a few months later. Furthermore, Cillian Murphy, the star of Nolan’s movie, won ‘Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture’ at both ceremonies, as did Oppenheimer’s Robert Downey Jr in the ‘Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture’ category.
As the first major award night of each calendar year, the Golden Globes is one of the most important evenings in the cinematic calendar. Notably, Ricky Gervais has hosted the ceremony on several occasions, and last year’s event was helmed by comedian Jo Koy.
Next January, Glaser, who has released four stand-up specials, will be steering the ship for the 2025 event, marking her first time on hosting duty. “I am absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Golden Globes. It’s one of my favorite nights of television and now I get a front row seat (actually, I think I have to host from the stage). The Golden Globes is not only a huge night for TV and film but also for comedy,” the comic said in a statement.
The comedian is also hoping to use the occasion as an excuse to poke fun at the stars in attendance rather than overseeing a Hollywood love-in, noting, “It’s one of the few times that show business not only allows but encourages itself to be lovingly mocked (at least I hope so). (God I hope so.) It’s an exciting, yet challenging gig because it’s live, unpredictable and in front of Hollywood’s biggest stars (who also might be getting wasted while seated next to their recent exes).”
Glaser continued by referencing some of her fellow comics who have previously hosted the Golden Globes, adding, “Some of my favourite jokes of all time have come from past Golden Globes opening monologues when Tina [Fey], Amy [Poehler] or Ricky [Gervais] have said exactly what we all didn’t know we desperately needed to hear.”
The stand-up concluded: “I just hope to continue in that time-honoured tradition (that might also get me cancelled). This is truly a dream job. Plus, I no longer have to feel guilty for every TV show and movie I’ve binged over the past year. It was all worth it. (Below Deck: Sailing Yacht Season Four will be nominated, right?)”.
Although Glaser has been confirmed as the host for the 82nd annual edition of the Golden Globes, films and television shows have until November 4th, 2024, to submit their entry for nomination.
The full list of nominations is set to be revealed on December 9th, 2024.
