Golden Globes 2024: Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ wins big
Throughout 2023, Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie were hyped up to be rival releases on social media. However, it seems like the Inception director has won the race, at least when it comes to this year’s iteration of the Golden Globes.
Oppenheimer, Nolan’s sprawling biopic about the titular physicist behind the infamous Manhattan Project, emerged as the biggest winner of the competition by taking home five awards. Ranging from a ‘Best Motion Picture – Drama’ win to an award for ‘Best Original Score’, Nolan’s latest work racked up prestigious accolades to complement its enormous box office total.
Cillian Murphy received the coveted ‘Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama’ for his haunting performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer, perfectly conveying the character’s various psychological burdens through the subtlest of expressions.
In his acceptance speech, Murphy said: “I knew the first time I walked on a Chris Nolan set that it was different. I could tell by the level of rigour, [and] the level of focus, the level of dedication, the complete lack of any seating options for actors.”
Nolan, who also picked up a win for ‘Best Director’, revealed: “The only time I’ve ever been on the stage before was accepting one of these on behalf of our dear friend, Heath Ledger. And that was complicated and challenging for me, and in the middle of speaking, Robert Downey Jr. caught my eye and gave me a look of love and support — the same look he’s giving me now, the same love and support he’s shown so many people in our community.”
The filmmaker added: “I thought it would be simpler accepting for myself, but as a director, I realised I can only accept this on behalf of people. As directors, we bring people together, and we try and get them to give their best.”
