Glen Powell reveals the one reason he wouldn’t play James Bond

Glen Powell has taken himself out of the running to play James Bond for one specific reason.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Powell was quick to reject the suggestion that he could play the huge character.

“I’m Texan. A Texan should not play James Bond,” the Anyone But You lead said. “My family and I joke around, I can play Jimmy Bond, but I should not be playing James Bond.”

The character, who was created in 1953 by author Ian Fleming in his novel Casino Royale, has largely been played by British actors, but Irishmen Pierce Brosnan and Australian George Lazenby have also been 007.

Powell wants this tradition to continue. “Get an authentic Brit for that job,” he said. “That’s who belongs in that tuxedo.”

Those at Amazon are hard at work searching for the next Bond. It was recently announced that Denis Villeneuve would be directing the upcoming franchise, with Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, attached to write the script.

Amazon purchased the rights to the franchise this year, spending $1 billion on the series and taking full creative control from the Broccoli family.

Powell is not the only actor to remove himself from the provisional list. Rocketman actor Taron Egerton rubbished claims that he might be the next Bond, stating, “James Bond is quite an undertaking and I think, one, as far as I’m aware, nobody’s asking me to do it. But also, it’s possibly not quite the thing that would make me happiest. I do think it’s a big old undertaking, it kind of consumes your life, a role like that.”
