Watch The 1975 close out Glastonbury with an emotional performance of ‘About You’
The 1975 took to the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival in a career-spanning headline slot, performing a moving rendition of their fan-favourite track, ‘About You’.
Their show was nothing short of a real spectacle. This was expected of the band, as a piece in The Telegraph claimed of The 1975’s production budget: “I’ve heard that they have spent four times their actual fee on the production.” Word of a collaborative fan project for the set also created an anticipatory buzz for the headline set.
Healy made his way across the stage on a moving dancefloor, Guinness almost permanently in hand, and a few cigarettes always close by. The rather more audacious set design from their previous tour was shunned in favour of a more classic, sparse rock ‘n’ roll set-up.
They played hits that spanned back to their very early days in the Manchester indie scene. Throughout the show, he quipped, “I was only joking about being a poet, I’m an idiot really,” and expressed his gratitude to the crowd.
During the Friday night headline slot, mythical magic is in the air. The festival is only in its early stages, and there are many more adventures to have. The nostalgic synths and emotional bridge of ‘About You’ matched that energy perfectly, imbuing the Friday night darkness with epic depth.
The indie-pop band have not only proved that their hits are hits for a reason, but they presented a band in transition, crossing over to a new era. Their manager, Jamie Oborne, noted of the band’s next album: “They’re making a record at the moment. I don’t know when it will come out, but they’re making one.” He spoke of how they deserve to take their time in this transitional period to make a truly remarkable record.
The 1975 took to the stage following sets throughout the day by Biffy Clyro, Alanis Morissette, and a secret set which turned out to be Lewis Capaldi. Other acts performing at Glastonbury include Loyle Carner, Wet Leg, Gracie Abrams, Inhaler, Four Tet and many more.
